Kingston Upon Thames, London

Kingston has a successful and compact riverside town centre. It is the de- facto town centre of south-west London, eclipsing nearby Richmond as a major shopping destination. However its confusing medieval layout and one-way system combine to make it difficult to expand the main retail pitch successfully.

This study, like Grand Arcade, Cambridge, was carried out on our own initiative and looks at a radical but potentially do-able way of unlocking the potential of vacant back-land and secondary shopping areas to create a huge increase in the prime retail pitch.
