Brescia, Italy

This scheme, carried out on behalf of a developer, was a sub-set of a larger master-plan for a planned urban expansion of this important historic city.

The challenge was to incorporate early C20th steel-making sheds with a distinctive industrial aesthetic into a cohesive retail town centre for the new settlement, incorporating a large new public square.

The special difficulty was how to deal with a diagonal main road that bisected the site. The solution was to manipulate the levels so that the ground floor effectively links by a series of ramps to the above road level so that the whole new shopping centre seamlessly crosses the road at the upper ground level with the parking underneath.

This development has now taken place, largely as planned , except for the rather literal interpretation of the centre's name, Freccia Rossa, which has resulted in the town been painted with rather too much red.
